THE STUDY

THE FIELD GUIDE

LEARN TO SEE THE LIVING WORLD DIFFERENTLY.

BIO.PRINTS begins with observation.

The more closely we look at the natural world, the more we begin to notice the systems, patterns, relationships, and processes that surround us every day.

Biophilic design begins in much the same place.

It asks a simple question:

What happens when we stop designing as though humans exist outside of nature?

The Field Guide is a growing collection of learning materials exploring biophilic design, environmental psychology, ecology, biodiversity, natural patterns, and the relationship between people and place.

This isn't about putting a plant in the corner of a room and calling it "biophilic."

It's about understanding the deeper relationship between human beings and the living systems we inhabit.

WHAT IS BIOPHILIC DESIGN?

Biophilic design is an approach to the built environment that incorporates elements, patterns, processes, and experiences associated with the natural world.

It can involve much more than plants.

Natural light.

Fresh air.

Water.

Natural materials.

Organic forms.

Views of nature.

Fractal patterns.

Biodiversity.

Seasonal change.

Prospect and refuge.

Sensory variation.

Connection to place.

The goal is not to make buildings look like forests.

The goal is to create environments that recognize that human beings evolved within living ecosystems.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

The places we inhabit influence how we experience the world.

Buildings affect what we see, hear, touch, smell, and feel.

They influence movement, attention, social interaction, privacy, comfort, and our relationship with the surrounding environment.

Biophilic design explores how those relationships can be intentionally considered when we design homes, workplaces, communities, landscapes, and other human environments.

In other words...

The environment isn't just the backdrop to human life.

It is part of the experience.

Nature has been designing for a very long time.

We should probably pay attention.

BIODIVERSITY & ECOLOGY

A living environment is more than what humans can see.

Explore ecosystems, species relationships, habitat, ecological restoration, native plants, pollinators, and the systems that allow life to function.
